National Secondary Schools Futsal championships success

March 27, 2024

Four Hillcrest teams, senior and junior boys and girls, competed at the national secondary schools last week in Wellington.

Both of our girls teams finished with a top 10 placing in the country and had some outstanding performances against some of the top schools in New Zealand. The senior girls scored 7 goals against both Havelock North and Bayfield on their way to qualifying for the top 8. Maddy Kay was named as the tournaments Golden Boot, an outstanding achievement at a national tournament! The junior girls had two draws against strong Wellington teams and beat both Rototuna and Epsom Girls Grammar and finished in 9th place. This group of girls are outstanding prospects for the future!

Our boys teams also tasted some success with the juniors finishing 14th in New Zealand and the seniors scoring a couple of wins in a tough senior boys draw. The coaching staff were extremely proud of the junior boys 1-1 draw against St Patrick’s, who are former national futsal champions. This was topped off with a couple of wins over St Thomas of Canterbury and an 8-3 thumping of St Bernards.

A huge thanks to Director of Futsal Luke Ashby for all his time and effort he puts into the school futsal programme, as well as coaches Olivia Hooper, Davis Vhavha, Sean McLeod and Head of Coaching Mike Groom. The teams success this year has been greatly enhanced by the expert coaching of these coaches and we look forward to continued success next season!
