Kelvin Whiting retires as Principal after 21 years

October 11, 2023

Kelvin has resigned as of the end of Term Four of this year to take up a role at the Education Review Office (ERO).

Read his statement below:

I am very proud of Hillcrest High School, having begun my teaching career here in the early 1980’s. Leading the school over many years has been both an honour and a privilege. I have also been fortunate that all of our children attended Hillcrest High. I believe that the school is in good heart, and it is now an opportunity for someone else to take the school forward.

Over the years there have certainly been some challenging times, but above all I can reflect on the many developments which have taken place as well as the staff and student achievements and successes throughout that time. We are blessed with wonderful staff who always have the students best interests at heart, many going above and beyond to meet their needs.

I would like to thank the current Board of Trustees and those previous boards for their support of myself and of the school and our supportive community as we all work together to provide the best opportunities possible for our students.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge my wife, Karen and our children’s support over the years. It is not just my role as a Principal, but the accumulation of 43 years in the teaching service, which included teaching at Matamata College, Howick College and Pakuranga College prior to arriving at Hillcrest in 2003. Karen’s support has been unwavering.

I leave Hillcrest High School completely satisfied and looking forward to my new role at the Education Review Office.

Ngaa mihi

Kelvin Whiting
