Year 13 student Rania Kahn was tasked at the start of the year to create a 5 metre mural for the Canteen Courtyard.
Originally she was going to create a full mural with lots of different types of food, but after discussions with Art Teacher Ms Alva it was decided to recreate the The Last Supper by Da Vinci but change the meaning to represent Hillcrest’s cultural diversity through the use of flags and students cultural foods.
This mural started off as a small sketch Rania created in Term 2, and by Term 4 we have a brand new addition to the Canteen Courtyard.
Before she began she took photos of students sitting around a table to use a as a reference photo for her mural, printing it out on tracing paper and traced it onto the mural board using a projector. From there she started working on the background and continued to work on the rest of the mural throughout the year.
Rania wanted to include as many different foods to represent the many different cultures here at Hillcrest so students are able to recognise their own cultural foods. The garlands of flags hanging from the roof of the mural came from a database of students and represents the top 30 nationalities we have here at Hillcrest. You can also see Hillcrest’s RAPID (Respect, Aim, Persevere, Identify and Diversity) values make an appearance as well.
A massive mihi to Rania who spent around 200 hours painting this mural. Her hard work, perseverance and resilience was shown throughout this project and a brilliant representation of our school values.
Check out the mural next time you’re at kura to see all her amazing work!
