In Week 10 of Term 3, a small but enthusiastic group of six Year 13 Digital Technologies students, accompanied by Mrs Langman and Mr Hopkirk, headed to Auckland for an inspiring two-day trip.
The first stop was Datacom, where three staff members shared their experiences working in different roles, including Software Development, Business Analysis, and User Experience Design. Students gained valuable insights into the variety of career pathways available within the tech industry.
The group also visited Google and Spark, exploring how these world-class companies operate, what their workplaces look like, and the opportunities they provide for future employment. Another highlight was meeting ex-student Hayley Sharpe, now studying Computer Science at Auckland University, who gave the students a first-hand perspective on transitioning from high school to tertiary study.
The trip included a visit to the All Blacks Experience, where students saw how interactive technologies enhance the visitor journey. Outside of the formal visits, the group stayed at the trendy Lylo hostel, connecting with travellers from around the world.
Students came away not only impressed by the high-tech environments they had explored, but also with some clear messages for their own journeys: be well-rounded, keep learning, and remember that employers value the “something extra” you bring to the table.
