Year 10 Sports Development

It has been a busy and practical term for our Year 10 Sports Development students.

Throughout the term, students learnt about bones, muscles, joints and discovering how the body moves and how understanding functional anatomy can help improve performance and prevent injury. They put this learning into practice through a range of strength and conditioning sessions, exploring different training methods including muscular endurance, hypertrophy, strength, mobility, plyometrics and injury prevention.

Students applied their knowledge through games, movement analysis, gym-based activities and practical challenges. They also completed a Functional Anatomy assessment where they analysed movement and identified the bones, muscles and joints involved in sporting actions.

Students stepped outside the classroom with visits to Extreme Edge Rock Climbing and the University of Waikato Sports Lab. At Extreme Edge, students experienced a different way of developing strength, balance and coordination, while the university visit gave them the opportunity to use specialist equipment including timing gates, a Wattbike, vertical jump testing and reaction lights. These experiences helped students see how sports science is used to enhance athletic performance in real-world settings.

It has been fantastic to see students challenge themselves, develop their understanding of the human body, and grow in confidence both in the classroom and during practical sessions.
