This week we celebrate Max, an outstanding advocate for the use and representation of New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) within our kura.

In the lead-up to Aotearoa NZSL Week, Max approached every opportunity with enthusiasm, pride, and a genuine commitment to helping others engage with one of New Zealand’s official languages.

Max played a key role in promoting NZSL across the school, presenting at senior assembly, interpreting the “Week Ahead” in NZSL, and contributing to a range of school-wide videos and initiatives. Through these actions, Max has helped normalise and celebrate the use of NZSL at Hillcrest High School, encouraging greater awareness, inclusion, and understanding within our community.

What stands out most is the way Max consistently demonstrates whakawhanaungatanga in all interactions with others. His kindness, patience, and willingness to support both students and staff in learning NZSL creates an environment where people feel safe, encouraged, and connected. Max brings a fun and positive energy to everything he does, making learning engaging and accessible for everyone around him.

Max truly embodies the values of Hillcrest High School and is a very deserving recipient of Student of the Week. Congratulations, Max!
