Board of Trustees Elections – Nominations Open Soon
This year, we will be holding elections for our Board of Trustees, and nominations open on the 18th of July. This is an important opportunity for parents, caregivers, and whānau to step into a key role in shaping the future of our kura.
Every state and state-integrated school in Aotearoa has a board. The board is responsible for the big-picture decisions that guide the direction of the school, including:
-
Setting policies and procedures
-
Planning for the future
-
Employing all school staff
-
Managing the budget Ensuring compliance with legislation
While the principal is responsible for the day-to-day running of the school, the board plays a crucial part in the governance and long-term vision of our kura. It’s a way for members of our local community to be actively involved and make a real difference in the lives of our tamariki.
Anyone who is a parent or caregiver of a student at the school can stand for election, as long as they are nominated by another parent. You don’t need to have prior governance experience—just a willingness to contribute, learn, and work as part of a team.
This year, we are especially keen to receive nominations from people who can offer skills in finance, property management, or strategic planning. These areas are important as we maintain and develop our school facilities and continue to manage our resources carefully. We are also writing our new strategic plan in October.
We also strongly encourage Māori whānau to consider standing for the board. Our school is proud to serve a diverse community, and we want our board to reflect the voices and aspirations of all our ākonga and whānau. Having more Māori representation ensures that Te Ao Māori is woven into our decision-making and the direction we take as a kura.
Being on the board is a voluntary role, although there is a small remuneration for attending Board meetings. The board meets once a month, and members are also part of working committees such as property, finance, or student discipline. The property and finance committees also meet once a month prior to a Board meeting. It is a rewarding way to contribute to the success and wellbeing of our school community.
If you’ve ever thought about how you could give back or influence the future of our school, this is your chance. Please consider putting your name forward or encouraging someone else with the right skills and passion to stand. You need to be a committed person who is aware there is work to do preparing for Board meetings and obligations that arise from Board meetings and the other committees of which you need to be involved with at least one.
