Sarah Fear’s journey through Hillcrest High School and beyond is a testament to the powerful influence of dedicated teachers and coaches in shaping her career and life.

Attending HHS from 1985 to 1989, Sarah’s talents were fostered by her Art Teacher, John Tae, who helped hone her artistic abilities to the point where she once exhibited alongside renowned artist Ralph Hotere. After completing a Fine Arts Degree at Elam School of Fine Arts at Auckland University, Sarah pursued a successful teaching career. She began teaching Art at St. Paul’s and later advanced to roles as Head of Department at Matamata College, Taumarunui High School, and Southwell, blending her passion for art and education.

Beyond her academic achievements, Sarah’s sporting career was deeply influenced by the coaching of Jill Jones and Glennys Brown, two exceptional Teachers and mentors in netball. Through their support and encouragement, Sarah represented Waikato in various netball teams for over 15 years, spanning age group and senior levels. The impact of these coaches was not just on Sarah but also on her sisters, Kathryn and Felicity, whom Glennys and Jill coached, making netball a lasting family legacy.

Sarah’s connection to Hillcrest High is further strengthened by the presence of her three sisters—Alex, Kathryn, and Felicity—who all attended the school across different decades. Now, Sarah’s daughter carries on the tradition, attending Hillcrest as well. With deep respect for the impact Glennys and Jill had on her, Sarah is currently following in their footsteps as the Junior Development Netball coach at Hillcrest, nurturing the next generation of athletes with the same dedication and passion that shaped her own life.
