Principal’s Message Term 2 Week 10

June 28, 2024

As we move through the school year, I want to highlight a few important points that contribute to the success and well-being of our students.

The Importance of Being in Class

We all know that consistent attendance is vital for academic success. Every lesson counts, and missing class can disrupt a student’s learning journey. I encourage you to prioritise your child’s attendance and ensure they are in school every day. The Ministry of Education has been actively reporting on attendance and they have given clear guidelines around wanting to raise attendance throughout New Zealand.

‘Regular attendance’ is when a learner misses less than a week of school a term. ‘Non‑regular attendance’ is when learners miss a week or more of school in a term.

The government has a target of ensuring 80 per cent of students are present for more than 90 per cent of the term by 2030.

If there is an unavoidable reason for your child to miss school, please remember that you must notify the school, preferably by ringing or emailing the school office that same morning.

If you are planning on taking your child on holiday during term time you are obliged to ask permission from the principal in advance. This helps us manage their absence and support their catch-up on missed work.

Participating in Sports and Events

It’s always a privilege to watch our students engage in sports and various school events. Recently I have seen talented and enthusiastic students participate in the Talent Crest, the International Concert, the Year 12 Drama production and sport during the week. These activities are a healthy part of being a teenager. The more students participate in extra activities around school the more they will have positive influences in their life.  I am proud of the dedication our students show and the spirit they bring to each event. Let’s continue to encourage their participation and celebrate their achievements.

Vaping Awareness and Prevention

We are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all students. Vaping has become a growing concern, and we need your support to ensure students do not bring vapes to school. Can you please help us by discussing the dangers of vaping with your children, as we are at school.

Managing Mobile Phones

To minimise distractions and enhance focus during the school day, students are required to leave their mobile phones at home or keep them turned off in their bags. This policy helps maintain a productive learning environment. Your cooperation in reinforcing this rule is greatly appreciated. We are continuing to improve systems to work with parents if a student needs to come out of class for an appointment. If you can give us lots of warning ahead of time this will also help.

Junior Celebration Assembly

In Week 2 next term we have our Junior Celebration Assembly to acknowledge students who have been working really hard both in and out of class. You will receive an invitation if your child is being acknowledged. We look forward to seeing you there.

And finally thank you for your ongoing support for our kura. Being a new principal at Hillcrest High school I am keen to meet with any community group to discuss your concerns and your aspirations for your children and your views on how our kura can support you. Please get in touch if you would like me to come to a meeting in your community. Together, we can ensure our students have the best possible educational experience.
