As we finish this term, I want to pause and reflect on what truly matters in our school community. At Hillcrest, we are working hard to hold high expectations for our students because we believe they are capable of so much.
When they work hard, show respect, and strive for their best, they discover what they are really capable of achieving. At times, however, we face challenges when students feel the rules don’t apply to them, or when parents side with their child against the school. This undermines the shared values that help young people grow. Teenagers need to see parents and teachers standing together modeling respect, discipline, and the belief that effort leads to success.
Nelson Mandela once said:
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Education is not just about lessons in the classroom. It is also about building resilience, character, and responsibility. These qualities flourish when parents support the school, encourage their children to aim high, and remind them that success is earned, not given.
As we head into the holidays, I especially encourage our senior students to use some of this time wisely in preparation for their upcoming external examinations. A balance of rest and study will ensure they return refreshed but also well on track for success. Consistent revision, even in small amounts over the break, will make a real difference to their confidence and performance when exam time arrives.
We have had wonderful opportunities and successes for students this term. Our Orchestra, Concert Band and Guitar group competed fabulously at the ITM competition placing second in our region and ‘Hoon’ our Rockquest band finished in the top 8 bands in New Zealand. We have had the extremely clever Greek Tragedy in the Year 13 production and many student driven activities at break times such as the Music Department concert and Languages Week.
On the sporting front we have had Tournament Week, the Rototuna Exchange and the end of the winter season of sports. All teams have played hard and had a range of successes.
A new Board of Trustees starts this week and I look forward to working with them. I want to publicly acknowledge the departing Board for their hard, hard work and timeless hours spent trying to achieve better outcomes for our students. In particular I want to thank Andrew Don and Kevin Endres for their personal support of my role.
