Hillcrest High School alumnus Pax Assadi is back on our screens, combining his sharp wit with an unexpected passion for conservation in the hit TV series Endangered Species Aotearoa.

Co-hosting alongside renowned conservationist Nicola Toki, Pax brings humour and curiosity to a show dedicated to showcasing Aotearoa’s most vulnerable wildlife and landscapes.

The duo’s adventures take them across the country, from the forests of Tiritiri Matangi to the deep waters of the Hauraki Gulf. In one unforgettable moment, Pax and Nicola emerge from the ocean, exhilarated after a rare encounter with a manta ray. “That’s one of the coolest things we’ve ever done on the show,” exclaims Toki, capturing the sense of wonder and connection with nature that Endangered Species inspires.

Throughout the series, Pax plays the enthusiastic and inquisitive learner, delighting in each new discovery. Whether marvelling at the critically endangered tara iti (fairy tern) or attempting to ‘adopt’ a fluffy petrel chick, his comedic timing and genuine awe make for an engaging and lighthearted viewing experience. But alongside the laughs, the show also delivers powerful messages about conservation, the impacts of colonisation, and the importance of protecting New Zealand’s native species.

The series highlights the dedication of conservationists, volunteers, and Department of Conservation (DOC) experts who work tirelessly to protect our natural heritage. From delicate bird banding efforts to discussions on habitat restoration, Endangered Species provides a fresh perspective on biodiversity while making complex environmental issues accessible and entertaining.

For Pax, who has built a successful career in comedy, this show represents a new and meaningful chapter. His journey from stand-up stages to conservation storytelling is a testament to the power of curiosity and the importance of preserving the magic of nature for future generations.

Hillcrest High School is proud to celebrate Pax Assadi’s achievements, showcasing how creativity and passion can come together to make a difference. Tune in to witness the perfect blend of comedy, conservation, and Kiwi storytelling.
