Our Student Leaders

Shaping the Future
Great leaders are not born; they are made through experience, responsibility, and the courage to inspire others.
Empowering Student Leaders
Empowering Students to Lead and Inspire
Along with developing leadership skills through education outside the classroom and involvement in extra-curricular activities, there are also a number of opportunities for students to develop their leadership capacity in formalised roles.
At the junior level, students can become involved in the Junior Council and ensure that the views and voices of the junior students are heard.
At the senior level, there are elected leadership positions available in the area of Arts, Culture, Environment, Service, Manukura and Sport. The leaders in these areas chair committees which students can join. The student body is led by four Head Students. A strong house system is led by House Captains.

James Back
As the year gets underway, we can sometimes talk too much about making it “the best year.”
But maybe it doesn’t have to mean everything being perfect — it’s about looking back and being able to say you genuinely enjoyed your time here.
Kia ora, I’m James, and together with Gemma, Poppy and Devlin, I’m proud to be part of the team supporting our school this year. We are focused on making this a year where everyone encourages one another, gets involved, and creates moments they’ll remember — not because everything was perfect, but because it was meaningful.
So let’s take pride in our kura, get involved, try something new and be a part of what makes this place special.

Devlin Early
Ko Devlin tōku ingoa, and I am incredibly proud to stand beside Gemma, Poppy, and James as your 2026 Head Students.
We’re excited for the year ahead and grateful for the opportunity to serve our Hillcrest High School community.
Our shared vision is to strengthen the unity of our kura, foster high engagement in house events, and celebrate everything that makes Hillcrest such an exceptional place to learn and grow. As your senior leader, I believe my role is to amplify ākonga/student voice—listening closely, elevating ideas, and ensuring every student feels seen, valued, and heard.
At the heart of our kaupapa is a simple aspiration: we all want our time here to matter. We want to contribute to a legacy that uplifts our school and leaves it even better for those who follow.
We’re looking forward to working alongside you all to make this year one we can truly be proud of.
Ngā manaakitanga.

Poppy Doran
Kia Ora! I can’t wait to make 2026 a special year for both our school and our community.
To me, this looks like ensuring that the school’s values are being upheld throughout the year and providing fun opportunities for students and whanau through events, parent evenings, and similar. Service is going to be a big focus for us this year, so I am here for you. If you have anything that you would like us to know or any ideas for potential things we can bring into HHS this year please reach out, I am happy to listen!
Alongside the other extremely deserving head students, James, Devlin and Gemma, along with the wider SSL, I hope to be able to create a Hillcrest High School that you are proud to be a part of. Whether that is as staff, students, whanau or other community members. 2026 is our year, so why not make it the best we can?

Gemma Herbert
As I’ve moved through my years at school I have always looked up to the senior leaders who were years above me.
To finally be the leader someone else is looking up to is an incredible feeling. Ki Ora, My name is Gemma and along with Poppy, James, Devlin and the rest of the SSL team I am looking forward to continuing to build Hillcrest High into a place where every student feels confident to express themselves, grow in their learning, and excel in extracurricular activities.
Most of all, we want this year to be full of school spirit, new friendships, big laughs, and moments we’ll always remember. So get ready to get involved, give things a go, and help us make this year one of the best yet!
