NZSL Week

During Week 3 (4-8th May), Our school proudly celebrated New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Week.

This week is vital for Aotearoa, celebrating the unique way thousands of kiwis communicate and connect. This year was especially exciting, marking 20 years since NZSL became an official language of New Zealand!

How our kura got involved

Our kura embraced this week with enthusiasm through several key initiatives:

  • Trying Something New: To kick things off, students from the PAC took the lead during a senior assembly, teaching our ākonga the signs for ‘Hillcrest High School.’ It was a powerful way to see our school name represented in a new way.

  • RAPID Challenge: Our RAPID classes had a shot at learning the NZSL alphabet. Students practiced signing their names and created class videos to showcase their progress. We received many amazing videos, and a huge congratulations to 10GR for their winning entry!

  • Digital Engagement: Engagement moved online through our Instagram stories. Created by PAC students, these interactive clips challenged our community beyond just staff and students to guess various phrases.

  • Scavenger Hunt: Throughout the school there was a scavenger hunt for students and staff to find and guess various posters with different signs on them. It was a fun, hands-on way to learn throughout the week!

A massive thank you to everyone who got involved. It was a wonderful reminder that in Aotearoa, anyone can sign anywhere.
