Hillcrest High School has a long history of educating young people who aim high and go on to work in the health sector.
At Middlemore Hospital in Counties Manukau, a very diverse area where health needs are high and often complex, we have three consultants spread across three critical areas at this extremely busy hospital.
They are Dr. Sam Moon, Dr. Carl Horsley, and Dr. Steven McBride.
Both of Sam Moon’s parents taught for a period in the Social Sciences Department at Hillcrest. Both he and his brother, Ben, went on to study medicine. He has been an emergency medicine specialist since 2013 at Middlemore—a period of 12 years in what is a frantically busy department.
Dr. Carl Horsley is an intensive care specialist who has been based at Middlemore for 17 years. He is also the Clinical Head of System Safety at the Health Quality and Safety Commission, where he and his team have developed practical applications of modern safety science in medicine. He is also a mad mountain biker!
Dr. Steve McBride is a specialist in infectious diseases and general medicine. He and his brother, Chris, will be remembered at the school as accomplished musicians, and Steve continues to follow his passion with a band called Vox Capacitor, who have made several recordings and are available on Spotify.
Middlemore is a hospital that has been at the forefront of several recent disasters, including the Whakaari/White Island eruption (with the National Burns Unit), the COVID-19 pandemic, measles outbreaks, serious flu epidemics, complex spinal injuries, and all of the other high-risk situations that occur in their community.
We are proud of the long years of service that these three have given to this hospital. It shows real commitment to a complex and diverse community and a passion for the work they do in the public health service.
