Some of the most valuable things we take from school are not grades, qualifications, or accolades – but the friendships that carry us through life. For three former Hillcrest High School students, that sentiment rings true.
Bridgette O’Sullivan (1988–1992), Kelly Parker (1987–1991), and Karma Boyce (1987–1991)all met during their senior years at Hillcrest and remain best friends today, a testament to the power of connection fostered within our kura.
Despite pursuing different career paths and life journeys, they share one common thread: their time at Hillcrest gave them friendships that are more like whānau.
Bridgette O’Sullivan
Managing Director of three companies; married with two daughters
Bridgette credits Hillcrest with giving her both “a strong educational foundation” and friendships that have lasted a lifetime. Her advice to current students echoes her own success: “Stay connected to your friend group, work hard, try different things and note what you enjoy.” She remembers fondly meeting those who would become lifelong friends, a foundation that continues to ground her today.
Bridgette is owner of The Red Barn and was inspired to lovingly transform a historic barn into a premium wedding and events venue. Bridgette has a hands on role as the managing director, always looking for new ways to develop and enhance the business.
Kelly Parker
Real Estate Agent at Lugtons; Mum of three, still living in Hamilton
Kelly reflects honestly on her school years – she enjoyed socialising more than studying, but she now realises those interactions shaped the strong interpersonal skills that have driven her career success. “Meeting my life-long friends who I am still very close with today” stands out as one of her favourite memories of Hillcrest.
She encourages current students to get involved, be open-minded, and give their best without taking school for granted, reminding them that it truly is “one of the best times of your life”.
Originally managing the NZTA portfolio at Colliers International she then went on to work in real estate listing and selling homes, and also has experience with the commercial side of real estate, Kelly has a wealth of knowledge of the industry and key skills to work by your side as you search for the perfect property.
Karma Boyce
Director of a boutique recruitment agency and property investment company; married with four children (including three stepchildren who also attended Hillcrest)
Karma believes Hillcrest helped her build resilience and adaptability – qualities that have helped her develop her career step-by-step. What stands out most from her time at school? “I made life-long friends. I’m still best friends with the group of girl friends I made in 6th Form. They are like family.”
Her advice to today’s students is straightforward and wholehearted: “Work hard and get involved in everything you can fit in.”
Karma is Director at Metro Recruitment which is NZ’s leading specialist recruitment agency for Advertising & PR, Marketing & Communications, Healthcare, Digital & E-Commerce, Sales, Aviation, Accounting and Administration jobs.

A Friendship That Endured
Though their careers span leadership, real estate, and business ownership, these three women share a lesson far more powerful than any qualification:
The friendships you build at Hillcrest can last well beyond your school days – nurturing, supporting, and shaping you for decades.
Their story is a celebration of connection, loyalty and the lifelong bonds that begin right here at Hillcrest High School.
Final Thoughts
To current students – treasure your friendships, participate fully, and take opportunities. As Bridgette, Kelly and Karma prove, the people you meet here may one day become your strongest allies, your greatest supporters, and your friends for life.
He tangata, he tangata, he tangata – it is the people.
