From the sports fields of Hillcrest High School to the renewable energy sector in London, Lewis Smith has forged a career grounded in resilience, self-belief and a willingness to seize opportunity.

Leading Change in Renewable Energy

Lewis currently lives in London, United Kingdom, where he works as Head of Residential and Commercial Solar within the renewable energy industry. In this role, he consults and recruits staff across the UK and Europe, collaborating with global clients to ensure major projects are delivered on time and to budget.

His leadership in this growing sector reflects the attributes he developed both in sport and at school – discipline, strategy, and long-term vision.

Sporting Success and Lessons in Determination

Despite describing himself as “not naturally talented” in the sport, Lewis’s proudest achievement to date was winning the 2013 National BMX Championships, a result of years of commitment and perseverance.
His success in BMX, hockey, and rugby taught him that true achievement stems from resilience and focus, lessons he now applies to business leadership.

The Hillcrest Influence

Lewis believes that while he originally saw sport as his future, school taught him much more. He reflects:

“Throughout my schooling career it actually taught me values that relate to business and have helped me develop a strong business mindset that are relatable to sporting values.”

Some of his best Hillcrest memories include:

  • Competing in Tier 1 and 2 National Hockey tournaments

  • A standout win against New Plymouth Boys’ High School

  • His final year of 1st XV Rugby, where he formed friendships that still exist today

Several teachers made a lasting impact, including Ryan Cox, Richard Baggs, and Shane Richardson, who helped shape his understanding of biomechanics, nutrition and performance.

Advice to Current Hillcrest Students

Lewis offers powerful and practical advice:

“Hard work will get you places. Saying yes to opportunities will take you further. Don’t be afraid to bet on yourself.”

He also reminds students to keep perspective:

“School is something that we take for granted. Enjoy it while you can. Start the conversation and look out for your friends… life won’t always be easy.”

And in words only an ex-student can truly express:

“Don’t be a dick – it won’t get you far.”

Looking Ahead

In the future, Lewis envisions returning closer to home:

“In the next 10 years I can see myself in Australia, running my own company – hopefully alongside some friends.”

Final Reflection

Lewis’s journey is an inspiring mix of hard work, humility, and passion – from BMX tracks and rugby fields to leading future-focused sustainability projects across Europe. His story is a reminder to our current students and recent graduates:

Back yourself. Work hard. Take opportunities. And most importantly – stay connected to those who matter.

Ka mau te wehi, Lewis – Hillcrest is proud of the energy you bring to the world.
