Level 1 DVC Explores The Pā at Waikato University

On February 4th, our Level 1 Design and Visual Communication (DVC) students, accompanied by Mrs Franklin and Whaea Caseymia, embarked on a trip to The Pā at Waikato University.

Welcomed onto the marae with a mihi whakatau, students were privileged to explore the wharenui and student centre, gaining invaluable insights into the cultural narrative woven into the building’s architecture.

Guided by Matua Whetū Taukamo, who had direct involvement with the architectural firms who designed The Pā, students studied the unique fusion of contemporary Māori design with traditional elements. Students were able to see the intricate design details up close and understand how they reflect cultural values and stories of the land. This experience provided an opportunity for our students to connect with and learn from the heritage embedded within the architectural and interior design, which will inspire them for their own structural design brief they are undertaking.
