International Student Mayoral Welcome

On Friday 6 March more than 150 new international students were formally welcomed to the city by the mayor, Tim McIndoe.

Fourteen of our new international students joined invited guests and other students from 11 Hamilton schools, Wintec and the University of Waikato. The event, held at the Paa, University of Waikato, provided a wonderful opportunity for students to connect, share experiences, and feel part of their new community.

Students enjoyed hearing from both past and present international students, who shared their journeys and offered helpful advice about studying and living in New Zealand. There were also vibrant cultural performances, including a powerful kapa haka performance from St John’s College and energetic dances from the Talents of the Pacific group which students were encouraged to join.

In his speech, Mayor McIndoe recognised the valuable role international students play in Hamilton. He highlighted not only their contribution to the local economy but also the richness and diversity they bring to the city’s culture.
