Alice Alva, HOD of Visual Art at Hillcrest created a solo exhibition which opened on the 16th of August at Masterworks Auckland named ‘She drew the flower that started the power’ – it is available for viewing until October 11th.

Here’s what she had to say about her exhibition.

She drew the flower that started the power’ is a continuation of my solo exhibition of paintings in 2023 entitled Mother/Nature, which reflected on my new identity as a mother and the hopes (and fears) I have for my very own flower, my daughter Daphne.

The world has become a complex place to navigate post-pandemic, more so in the last couple of years of changing governments, the rise of AI, and wars and occupations, particularly in Gaza. As a mother and a teacher, I often ponder what the world will look like for our young people, and I try to remain optimistic.

This series of works, using a range of embroidery practices, is an act of passive resistance. I offer the flower as a repeating motif of hope, and as a universal symbol of peace.’

A massive mihi to Alice for this mahi. It’s very inspirational for our students. If you’re up in Auckland in the next few weeks, make sure to check it out.
