We’re thrilled to highlight the outstanding contribution of our Year 10 Sports Development students who recently volunteered at the WILSS Amazing Race event at Hamilton Gardens.
The Amazing Race is a challenging and fun event held at the Hamilton Gardens where teams of Years 5 & 6 and Years 7 & 8 complete a variety of physical, cognitive and creative tasks within set time periods.
-
Our students acted as volunteers and facilitators for key “pit-stop” activities, supporting younger learners through leadership, teamwork and problem-solving.
-
Their involvement aligns perfectly with our school values of service, community engagement, and student leadership — demonstrating that it’s not just about being on the field, but contributing off the field too.
-
By participating in this event, our Sports Development students developed real-world leadership skills: guiding teams, offering encouragement, and helping the event run smoothly.
Highlights of the day:
-
Greeting and briefing competing teams as they arrived at the gardens.
-
Manning pit-stop stations with creativity, energy and kindness, helping younger students navigate tasks that challenged them physically, mentally, and socially.
-
Reflecting afterwards on the importance of volunteering and what it means to lead by example in our school and wider community.
A huge thank you to all the Year 10 Sports Development students who signed up and showed up with enthusiasm. The event organisers from WILSS commented on the value of volunteers in building young leaders.
Volunteering at events such as the WILSS Amazing Race provides more than just a “nice to have” experience. For our students it builds their confidence, expands their leadership capacity, and strengthens the bonds between Hillcrest High School and our local community. We look forward to seeing how these young leaders continue to make a difference, both inside and outside our kura.
