HHS Chamber Music Groups compete in Waikato Competiton

July 1, 2024

On Wednesday 5th June our five chamber music groups from Hillcrest High competed at the Waikato district round of the competition.

Although we didn’t win, two of the four highly commendeds (top 4 groups other than the winners) were from Hillcrest!

Highly Commended 1: Hunter Moir (Y12), Hannah Parkinson (Y11), Yanfei Chen (Y11)

Highly Commended 2: Justine Hua (Y10), Olivia Su (Y10), Michelle Lei (Y11) exceptional violinist.

And a honourable mention for Piano Six Hands (Raphael Wu Y11), Annie Wang (Year 9!) and Ariel Wu (Y12) – this was a real crowd pleaser!

We were also especially delighted with the inaugural brass quartet, made up of our Pasifika (Tongan) siblings (Mele, Ma’ata, Lavinia and Uheina) who played the most gorgeous harmonies, with elegance and poise.

Special appreciation goes to our dedicated teachers, coaches, and mentors, whose guidance has been instrumental in our students’ success.

This event highlights the collaborative effort within our community to foster and support young classical chamber musicians, reflecting Hillcrest High’s commitment to excellence in the arts.
