We are proud to feature former Hillcrest High School student McKenna Lesley, whose path from practical learning in school to engineering studies and industry success showcases the power of perseverance, curiosity, and embracing hands-on opportunities.
Still at school, McKenna enrolled in the WINTEC Trades Academy programme to explore practical learning. What began as an interest soon evolved into a passion for fabrication. Her dedication was recognised through the Excellence Award in Level 2 Manufacturing & Technology, sponsored by Longveld.
This achievement led directly to McKenna securing a Light Fabrication Apprenticeship with Longveld, where she now works full-time. Her role involves precision welding, large-scale fabrication, component assembly, and the use of modern engineering tools.
Balancing Industry Experience with Tertiary Study
McKenna is also studying part-time towards a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) majoring in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Waikato, completing two papers per semester while continuing her work in the industry. Her ability to balance academic development with hands-on trade work is a testament to her motivation and self-discipline.
Overcoming Barriers in a Male-Dominated Field
Entering a traditionally male-dominated industry presented challenges, but McKenna speaks candidly about growing confidence, the importance of supportive colleagues, and learning to back herself.
She highlights the value of mindset, reminding young people that mistakes are part of the learning journey, not something to fear.
School Subjects That Still Matter
McKenna notes how several school subjects continue to benefit her work:
-
Mathematics – heavily used in fabrication work and written requirements.
-
Physics – crucial for understanding structural movement, loads, and safety systems.
-
Communication & teamwork – vital when collaborating on-site and solving complex fabrication problems together.
Advice to Current Hillcrest Students
“Don’t be too hard on yourself. Take a step back, explore what’s out there, and give things a go. You might just find your thing where you least expect it!”
She encourages students to be curious, take up work experiences, and stay open to unexpected opportunities.
McKenna’s journey reflects our “Find Your Place” kaupapa at Hillcrest High School. She is shaping a promising future in engineering – grounded in practical skill, supported by tertiary development, and driven by resilience and curiosity.
