Former Hillcrest student Marcus Overwater is currently completing a PhD at ETH Zurich in Switzerland, one of the world’s leading universities for science and technology.
Marcus’ research sits within the field of computational evolution, where he uses mathematics and computer algorithms to analyse genomic data. His work focuses on reconstructing evolutionary trees that map the relationships between organisms — research that can help scientists better understand the diversification of species, the spread and origin of viruses, and even the development of cancer from a single cell into a tumour.
Working at the intersection of mathematics, biology, and computer science, Marcus is contributing to research with real-world applications and global significance.
We are incredibly proud to see Hillcrest alumni pursuing advanced research at an international level and wish Marcus all the very best as he continues his academic journey in Switzerland.
