Former Hillcrest High School student Sasha Devia is forging an impressive path in the trades industry, recently being recognised nationally as one of just four recipients of the 2025 Bunnings Women in Apprenticeships Award.
After graduating from Wintec with merit in automotive engineering in 2021, Sasha discovered a passion for welding while studying mechanical engineering. That passion quickly led her into an apprenticeship with Hamilton-based company TRT, where she became the company’s first female apprentice and only female fabricator.
Sasha’s achievement is about more than personal success. She has become a strong advocate for women entering trades and engineering, encouraging others to be curious, work hard, and back themselves in industries where women are still underrepresented.
As part of the award, Sasha received a prize package worth more than $10,000, including tools and professional support to help continue her career journey.
We are incredibly proud to see Sasha thriving in her chosen field and helping inspire the next generation of wāhine in trades. Her story is a fantastic example of where determination, passion, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities can lead.
