Hillcrest High School alumnus Roger Sutton has built an impressive career as one of New Zealand’s most respected business and governance leaders, demonstrating how curiosity, problem-solving, and a strong educational foundation can open doors to a wide range of opportunities.
An engineer by training, Roger studied at the University of Canterbury before embarking on a career that would see him lead major organisations across both the private and public sectors. Over the years, he has gained extensive experience at governance, chief executive, and senior management levels, earning a reputation as an innovative and influential leader.
Today, Roger continues to contribute his expertise across a number of organisations. He is Chairperson of Chatham Islands Electricity, a Director of Electra Energy and Independent Line Services, and serves as Principal Strategy Advisor for DETA. His work focuses on some of the key challenges and opportunities facing New Zealand, including the future of energy and the transition to a more sustainable, climate-conscious economy.
Throughout his career, Roger has remained passionate about problem-solving and analytical thinking. Reflecting on his love of mathematics, he has said, “I love numbers. Numbers solve problems for me, or at least offer a different way of looking at things.”
