Former Hillcrest High School student Todd Harper has built a career shaped by leadership, creativity, communication, and a passion for working with people.

After graduating from Hillcrest in 2015, Todd explored opportunities across a range of industries including major events, technology, software, sales, and digital marketing.

Currently, Todd is back at university completing a graduate diploma in strategic management before beginning a Master’s in Teaching and Learning (Secondary), while also working part-time in fundraising and events at St John’s College. His move into education reflects a desire to continue making a positive impact through leadership, communication, and supporting others.

One of Todd’s career highlights has been working with internationally recognised entertainment brands including Sundance Film Festival and SXSW. Closer to home, he also served as Event Director for Hamilton Christmas, helping bring festive celebrations to tens of thousands of people across the city.

Todd says his time at Hillcrest played a significant role in shaping his career pathway and aspirations. Opportunities to take on leadership roles, work on projects, and become involved in the wider school community helped him discover a passion for storytelling through communications and marketing, while also building strong people skills that continue to support him today.

Reflecting on his school years, Todd remembers being heavily involved across many areas of school life. He served as Te Puea House Captain, was part of the Assembly and Events Tech Crew, Orchestra, SADD, Peer Support, and the Hillcrest Student Team, while also taking on leadership opportunities such as Year 10 Camp Leader.

Todd credits a number of staff members with making a lasting impact during his time at Hillcrest, including Ms Cash, Mr Cook, Mrs Bunn, Ms Clifton, Mr Johl, Mrs Radford and his former sociology teacher, Mr Cox.

Looking ahead, Todd hopes to continue developing as a secondary school educator and eventually take on leadership opportunities within schools, helping shape positive learning environments for both students and staff.

His advice to current students is simple: get involved, try new things, and embrace opportunities. Todd believes the experiences, friendships, and skills developed through school life can shape future pathways in ways students may not yet realise.
