Kevin Hessell was Principal of Hillcrest High School between 1992 – 2003. He always considered that this job was the pinnacle of his career in education and counted it a great privilege to lead the school for 11 years.
He believed that the success of the school at this time was due to the
extraordinary commitment that the staff showed to their students. During his tenure the school excelled in national examinations and the academic focus of the school was recognised as being very strong.
In 1995 Mr Hessell received a Woolf Fisher Scholarship to visit North America and the United Kingdom in recognition of his work as an outstanding Principal.
Kevin had a strong belief that learning and working in co-educational environment was both natural and advantageous. He always said that It helped develop healthy relationships with other students and promoted understanding.
Since his retirement, Kevin worked as an educational consultant for a time. He has now relocated to Wellington where he lives with his wife Jenny and where his two daughters and grandchildren live.
In retirement he continues to be a strong supporter of the school and is always interested in and connected both to current events and developments at the school and to Alumni and staff.
