Since leaving Hillcrest High School in 1988, Andrew Malcolm has built a career grounded in technical excellence and driven by a commitment to social good.

Today, Andrew works as a Software Engineer at The University of Waikato and is the Director, Founder, and Board Member of Charity.Net Trust, an organisation focused on providing internet support to non-profits. His work combines advanced technological expertise with service to others, a powerful example of innovation with purpose.

Career Highlights

An early highlight came in 1991, when Andrew received the AGC Young Achiever Award, shortly after graduating with straight A grades in his BCMS (Bachelor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences) at the University of Waikato. These milestones demonstrate his perseverance, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to excellence.

The Hillcrest Impact

Andrew credits his time at Hillcrest for nurturing his passion for computing and mathematics, recalling how strong teaching fostered his interest in problem solving and innovation. He also reflects fondly on opportunities to explore music, particularly experiments with synthesisers which encouraged creativity alongside academic rigour.

In recognition of his influence and achievements, Hillcrest High School proudly presents The Andrew Malcolm Award for Computer Science at Senior Prize Giving each year, awarded to a student who demonstrates outstanding capability and passion in digital technologies and programming. This honour is a legacy of his contribution to the field and a source of inspiration for future engineers and innovators.

Teachers Who Inspired

Andrew acknowledges several staff who made a lasting impact:

  • Mr. Love – “the epitome of the Maths scholar” who challenged him to grow.

  • Jessica Littler – remembered for kindness and pastoral care.

  • Sue Radford – who, with honesty and encouragement, helped nurture his creative and analytical thinking.

Their support informed not only his academic journey but also his personal development.

Words of Wisdom for Current Students

Math is useful, truly! AI will give false truths for many years to come — learn to verify results.

Andrew encourages students to question assumptions, think critically, and embrace creative problem solving, skills that remain vital in today’s rapidly evolving digital world.

Looking Ahead

Andrew sees himself continuing to do what he loves, reinforcing the importance of purpose and passion:

Find a job you love and stick at it. Advancement and money don’t bring happiness.

“Focus on the good, ignore the bad, and say ‘Thanks’ for every kindness and random grace.”

Andrew Malcolm exemplifies the values of curiosity, generosity and humility. From Hillcrest High to engineering leadership, his journey and the award that bears his name continue to inspire our students to think critically, innovate boldly, and lead with quiet confidence.

A valued member of our alumni whānau — thank you, Andrew.
