Janet Guo (Yr13) and Jess Licht (Yr 12) have been named in the Waikato Regional Debating team to compete at the National Schools’ Debating Championships in May. The team was announced at the conclusion of the Waikato Regional Debating competition, which was held last Sunday. Serene Tangitu (Yr 13), Sarah Crowther (Yr12) and Janet represented Hillcrest at the competition.

This year it was held online, so the debaters spent the day at school, debating via Zoom. After winning their preliminary round debates, they unfortunately lost in the semi-final. However, Sarah was awarded Most Promising Speaker and was also named in the Waikato Regional Development Squad. Janet was also named Best Speaker for the competition. Jess was unable to debate on the day, so she was selected for the Waikato team after submitting three recorded speeches to the adjudicators.
