Central North Island Spelling Bee Semi-final

Five students represented Hillcrest at this year’s Central North Island Spelling Bee Semi-final.

Year 9 and 10 competitors from as far away as New Plymouth competed for a place at the national final in Wellington. Muinat Oladejo, Maxwell Alfaras, Janya Ravikumar, Sophie Armstrong and Percival Gilson demonstrated their spelling prowess through a number of increasingly tense rounds, with the aim of avoiding the dreaded bell that rings after a word is spelt incorrectly, indicating the end of the competition for the speller. Spelling becomes even more difficult when standing on stage with a microphone!

All our spellers did incredibly well and although our spellers didn’t make it to the final this year, a special mention goes to Janya, who made it through to Round 5 and Pervial, who made it through to Round 6.
