Basketball update
August 20, 2024
As we come to the end of the 2024 season we have time to reflect on the changes seen around basketball at Hillcrest High. Huge progress has been made with player development and we have started to see significant improvements in players understanding the fundamentals of the game.
Our Premier girls team have performed admirably despite the departure of their coach mid-year, however we have been fortunate to have a new coach, Te Whati Kihiki-Waikato come in and continue to help the girls reach their potential. The most recent game vs Otumoetai produced an emphatic 37-13 victory which certainly indicates that the team is moving in the right direction.
Likewise, the Junior Boys Premier team, coached by Tama Green, have had an up and down season with local results, however their performance against Otumoetai’s team showed a lot of progress was being made with a solid 66-53 victory. The senior boys premier team are in a transition phase where a lot of the experienced players have moved on, so blooding in young new talent will hopefully achieve greater successes in the 2025 season.
With the number of students participating in basketball growing, we continue to ask for more whanau volunteers to coach & manage, so that all our students get the opportunity to compete for our school.
While our teams have been competitive in the local leagues, the future is looking bright for Hillcrest High School basketball.
