Lisa Perrott is Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Screen and Media Studies at the University of Waikato. Lisa’s research interests centre on the relations between music, sound and image and the remediating propensities of audio-visual mediums.
Her interests in popular music, artistry, indigenous modes of storytelling and representation inform her research and teaching across the fields of documentary, animation, transmedia storytelling, and media and cultural studies.
Lisa is author of the book ‘David Bowie and the Art of Music Video’ (Bloomsbury Academic, 2023) – the first book to provide a scholarly analysis of Bowie’s music video outputs as a cross-platform collection spanning several years. Lisa is co-editor, with Holly Rogers and Carol Vernallis, of the Bloomsbury book series ‘New Approaches to Sound, Music and Media’, and the collected volume ‘Transmedia Directors: Artistry, Industry and New Audiovisual Aesthetics’ (2019). In collaboration with Ana Cristina Mendes, Lisa co-edited the book ‘David Bowie and Transmedia Stardom’ (Routledge, 2019) and the special journal issue ‘Navigating with the Blackstar: The Mediality of David Bowie’ (Celebrity Studies, 2019).
Lisa has several years experience as an external examiner for post-graduate projects, and has undertaken numerous degree monitoring and accreditation roles for NZQA and the tertiary sector.
Within the University of Waikato, Lisa serves as Te Kura Toi representative on the ALPSS Research Committee and as Divisional representative on the University of Waikato Student Disciplinary Committee, and a member of the special tranche of the Student Disciplinary Committee established to assess sexual violence cases. Lisa also serves as Arts Advisor for the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme.
“I am a senior lecturer/research at Waikato University, in the School of Arts. I have 2 adult daughters – Maia Smith (ne Wharawhara), and Katya McGeady (both alumni of Hillcrest High School). I have 3 beautiful grandchildren (Maia’s children).”
