Exciting Plans for Hillcrest United Team in 2025

We’re thrilled to announce that Hillcrest United will be entering a men’s team into Waikato Division One next year! This team will feature a strong core of current Hillcrest High School players, former players, and even staff members.

This initiative provides an incredible opportunity for our players to compete at a high level of men’s football while proudly representing Hillcrest United and the values and culture of our school.

Participating in this team will also enhance players’ abilities when representing Hillcrest High School in future competitions. The team will be led by the player-coach duo of former All White Michael Groom and Director of Football, Josh Groom.

Head Coach Michael Groom commented:
*“Hillcrest United is an exciting football initiative for 2025 that will see a significant number of the school’s First Eleven playing in the top men’s league in the region. Led by the vision and enthusiasm of Mr Josh Groom and the support of Mr Matt Bryant, this team will undoubtedly inspire and motivate the senior footballers in the school who want to reach the next level.

This additional experience will have a powerful impact on the First Eleven’s performance, with the extra physical and technical demands of men’s football flowing back into the team. Without a doubt, in order to be competitive, there will be high expectations both on and off the pitch for those involved. But, alongside this, there will be a very important fun factor!”*

Mr Groom senior and junior recently travelled to Sydney to watch Ronaldinho play, a player who has inspired Mr Groom senior for the last 20 years. Ronaldinho’s influence will be at the heart of the team. Mr Groom junior will play in the team, while his young son Mason will serve as the mascot. The iconic Brazilian song “Mas que Nada” will be blaring in the changing room before kick-off.
