We’re always proud to see our former students shine, and this month, we’re celebrating Aaron Sharpe, who’s making noise — quite literally — with his rising band Coppelia.

Meet the newest boys on the block in Tāmaki Makaurau: Coppelia. Made up of four engineering students and one film student from the University of Auckland, the band formed after a chance meeting at an O-Week street party, where a shared passion for music quickly turned into something much bigger.

From humble beginnings performing at house parties to headlining a packed single release show at Double Whammy, Coppelia is quickly becoming a name to watch in the Aotearoa music scene. Their high-energy performances and uniquely Kiwi take on alternative rock have already earned them a loyal following.

Their debut singles “Forget It” and “Manasoul” are now streaming on all major music platforms — the perfect soundtrack for a New Zealand summer. With punchy guitar riffs and infectious energy, Manasoul was born during a jam session where the band would shout, “Add a bit of mana!” — that spirit now runs through every beat of the track.

The band’s name pays tribute to guitarist Jack Towers’ hometown roots in Tauranga, named after Coppelia Avenue, a street that symbolises sun-soaked summers and simpler times.
