Student learning is supported in a variety of ways. Year 9 and 10 students are identified for assistance through common entry testing, reports from contributing schools and parent referrals. These students are supported in the main stream classes by Teacher Aides. Teacher Aide help is provided in a range of classes with the priority being given to English. This assistance continues, when resources are available, to the end of Year 10. Students are also selected for the Early Start to Qualifications programme. This initiative gives these students an extra boost to their literacy learning so that they are better prepared to succeed in Year 11. For Year 11-13 students, in-class assistance is given in English and Maths classes for students previously identified as needing support. Reader-writer assistance is provided for those students who meet the NZQA criteria. The Learning Support Co-ordinator will make referrals to RTLB and GSE services and other Ministry and Community agencies when this is thought to be beneficial. Groups of Year 9 and 10 students are also supported by Year 13 students in Reading, ESOL and Maths when appropriate. Students are assessed on arrival, presented with course advice and placed in appropriate classes to suit their language needs and abilities. A special foundation English programme for students requiring intensive English is also an option.
