International & Exchange Students Our dreams of a new International Centre at Hillcrest High will become reality with plans for the new building well advanced. The Centre will be placed at the front of the school and provide a purpose built facility with provision made for social events, two teaching spaces and offices for the International & ESOL Department. Building will be completed by the end of 2011. Term Two was off to a good start with our annual overnight International Camp. For the first time we went to Raglan. After an energetic walk to Bridal Veil Falls we headed to the beach for an afternoon of beach activities. With a different locality for each year they are at HHS, International & Exchange Students have a great opportunity to see and experience some of the beautiful, natural parts of New Zealand. We then had a magical Raglan Harbour cruise on the ‘Wahinemoa’. The harbour was calm and the weather beautiful, a great end to the day. We stayed the night at Karioi Lodge and after a day of fresh sea air and a great meal, organised by Team Mackenzie & Weiss, bed was very welcome. The next day was a surfing lesson for some and a bush walk for the remainder of the group. Both activities needed lots of energy and enthusiasm. Lunch and then time spent in Raglan town ship was a welcome break after two days of activities. The Hillcrest Park Festival will be held on 10th July. This is a follow-up to the Hillcrest Park Funday of last year. Once again International & Exchange Students have been asked to volunteer their time to help with publicity, setting up on the day, performing on stage and helping with face painting and similar activities. It will be a fantastic afternoon. At the end of Term 2 we farewell three very popular students, Leonie Ehresmann, Timon Krause and Andrea Yang. Leonie and Timon return to Germany and Andrea will finish Y9 in Auckland. Leonie was here for one semester and was involved in the senior production of ‘Godspell’. She recently spent some time with students in the PAC Unit, something she said she would not have experienced in a German school. Timon is an Exchange Student with Rotary and has amazed & entertained us for the past year with his magic & his stage tricks. Andrea was initially in our Foundation Programme and then progressed into mainstream classes. She made many friends at school and we hope she will keep in touch with them. We have enjoyed having Leonie, Timon and Andrea at HHS and hope they leave with good memories of their time with us. In Term 3 we look forward to welcoming Lenard Genters from Germany and Haoxi Bi and Justine Cheang from China. Donation to International Centre We would like to acknowledge the generous financial donation from the family of a previous International Student. We appreciate their continuing interest in Hillcrest High School and will use the donation towards landscaping around the new building. Although this donor preferred to remain anonymous, we intend to formally acknowledge any other donations towards the new building with a suitable acknowledgement in the International Centre.
